I still cannot believe it... my little boy is one! I've heard others say that it flies by and I guess they were not lying. The year has gone wooshing by and I am just so excited for the next one to continue to see him grow and learn new things. On Sunday, we had some wonderful friends over to celebrate with us (basically we just like a good excuse to get together for desserts). Houston took a minute to get what he was supposed to do and by the end was really digging in.
Thanks to cousin Leland who was the first to call followed by Cole and Brighton with great Grandma and Grandpa. And thanks to friends who came to join in the festivities.
And now to my little handsome man Houston-
I am SO grateful Heavenly Father sent you to our house to live. I've known for a long time now that I love your daddy very much and used to think he made my life complete. But now looking back, how could I have felt complete back then without you. You bring so much joy to our lives. We sometimes watch you pace up and down the halls just for fun. You have such a sweet demeanor always looking to share. Sometimes when you offer to share things with other kids and they don't accept your offering, you look at us like, "mom, dad, why don't they want my gift to them?". 95% of the time you are perfect, but man do you know how to throw a tantrum! You have always known how to turn up the volume on your screams. I remember the second night in the hospital when you were born and they brought you back to my room at 2 am and said, "I'm sorry ma'am, he screams too loud to be in the nursery. He is waking up the other babies". It is like you wanted them all up to party with you. But I was happy to have you back in my room to snuggle.
You have the cutest dance moves where you lean your head to each side, bounce up and down, and shake one hand. You love to play point guard when daddy and mommy play bball with you. You still love snuggles after nap time while you drink your bottle. When mommy or daddy go in the other room, you pout for a bit but then try to say hi by waving your fingers under the door. You LOVE the refrigerator- and get an adrenaline rush every time you make it out with a bag of carrots and run off. Little do you know that I will never stop you from eating carrots :) Daddy misses you like crazy when he goes to school and you are always excited to see him when he gets back right before bed. You are the best alarm clock. you wake mommy and daddy up between 630 and 730 and then usually come lay by us for snuggles for a half hour or even an hour. You have got "mama", "dada", and "nigh-nigh" down pretty well. You are a good boy to sit on my lap or sit at my feet while I work on the computer. Sometimes you'll just stand right next to me and lean on my lap while I type. It usually melts my heart so I give in and pick you up.
You still prefer electronic devices and cords over anything that hints at a baby toy but now that mom and dad have locked up your favorites, you are starting to get into Mickey and colorful toys. You think the vaccuum is your best friend or your worst enemy- we still can't tell. Every time we turn it on- you run up to face him like a man and look right into the barrel with no fear of the loud noise. You are definitely our tough boy and did not cry at all during your shots. We do know your worst enemy is your stuffed elephant- you still cry when it roars. You love it when dad plays "I'm gonna get you" and you usually run away from him and either run into the big love sac for protection or if you know it is too long of a run- you'll drop to your diaper and hunch over with your face to the ground in hopes daddy won't see you anymore. During the day, you like to play hide n seek with mommy, read books, and play pull out and have mommy put back every book and dvd we own. Your new thing is to try to get mom and dad to laugh. Although we try our hardest to keep straight faces and tell you "no-no" your latest hit is to walk around lightly hitting yourself on the head with the remote control. Then you stop and start laughing really hard. You are still ticklish- at times from head to toe. Your favorite thing you have always loved is slowly feeling all of daddy's whiskers.
There are days that I wake up and think "I get to see Houston today" which is silly because I get to see you everyday and I cannot believe how much I missed you just during 8 hours of sleep. There are times that I pick you up from a nap and I literally think my heart is going to burst with love and try to think of ways that I can hold you longer and tighter. There are times when I look in your eyes and can't help but gasp because I think you are the most gorgeous thing I have ever seen- maybe even more handsome than your daddy- and that is hard :) There are ALWAYS times that I think, "How on earth did I get so lucky?"
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Heavenly Father for sending this wonderful spirit to be in my life. There is truly no greater call than to be the mother and father to this bundle of joy. We love you Houston.
Love,
Mommy and Daddy
